Broadway 2 A Day: 1985 - 1989 (Edwin Drood, Les Mis, Into the Woods, Phantom, Carrie)

Hi friends! I have officially listened to (or skipped through) an absurd amount of cast recordings (238) and this challenge is living up to its name at the moment!

I have been very busy with work, traveling, trying to maintain a social life, trying to focus on my mental health with therapy and ample time to rest - and I often feel like I don't have enough time in the day to do it all, especially this blog. But - I have come this far and I think it will be worth it in the end to have this comprehensive record of how I felt about these shows.

Things are really picking up now in the 80s and we have a lot of hits, so let's dive in!

  • The Mystery of Edwin Drood
    • Have I heard of it before? Yes but only knew a couple songs
    • Did I enjoy it? Yes, I would definitely go see this.
    • Synopsis: The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a hilarious, interactive whodunit mystery musical that allows the audience to enter the action and become the ultimate detectives. The show is based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel of the same name. In small town of Chesterham, England, the young and charming Edwin Drood has been mysteriously murdered. But by whom? His leering romantic rival, John Jasper? The infamous purveyor of opium and vice, Princess Puffer? The mysterious Landless twins, newly arrived from Ceylon? Or someone else even more dastardly and villainous? Dickens passed away before he was able to reveal the culprit. Rupert Holmes’ award-winning musical solves this predicament by asking the audience to choose which character is the killer by putting it to a vote. (Stage Agent)

However, he will only receive his inheritance if Sir John and the Duchess approve of him. The Duchess feels that with a little grooming, Bill will be suitable to inherit the title – and the money. However, she insists that Bill break up with his cockney girlfriend, Sally. Bill refuses to accept the title if cannot keep Sally as his girl. Eventually, Sally is groomed to become more lady-like. Thus, Bill is allowed to inherit the title and keep his girl. (Stage Agent)

  • The Mikado
    • Have I heard of it before? No
    • Did I enjoy it? No, I can't do anymore Gilbert and Sullivan
    • Synopsis: As with many of Gilbert and Sullivan’s productions, the show satirizes aspects of Victorian Britain’s politics and aristocracy; in The Mikado, however, the duo cleverly cloaked these criticisms behind a charming story set not in Britain, but in exotic Japan. Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado (the Japanese emperor), has fled in disguise to avoid marrying a much older suitor, and to find and marry his own beloved, the beautiful Yum-Yum. Yum-Yum, however, is the ward of Ko-Ko, the lord high executioner, and has become betrothed to him against her will. (Stage Agent)
